My MSN Application is running slow

I have just finished updating my Qwest MSN to MSN Premium and the update version is 4 times slower than the Qwest MSN. When MSN my.homepage opens and I want to switch to email it just crawls to about 90 seconds or longer to switch to the MSN Email page. The same thing happens when I go to Settings or any other MSN function. I am running XP with the latest service pack installed. The Qwest MSN switch time was almost instantly. Thanks for you help.

I also wanted to let you  know that I tried the Optimization troubleshooting suggestions from the link you provided and it did find a few things to clean up but the slowness of MSN windows opening or switching has not changed. To access my MSN acount I click on the MSN Butterfly, pick my user account, and then login. What shows up eventually is MyMSN webpage with large icons across the top for various tasks, like settings, email, MSN Golbal, home... This is the application that is running slow. If I activate my account using Internet Explorer, opening MSN and then loging into my email, I do not have the problem.

Should I delete MSN and then reinstall it? Would that help?

Hi Tom,

If you’re able to view emails on the Hotmail website, with the MSN software its synchorzation issue, we need to rename the .sdf file, once we rename the .sdf file you would be able to view emails on the MSN.

Please find the steps below to rename the .sdf file:

For Windows XP

Note: Sign out from MSN then close the program before performing the steps below.

         1. Click ‘Start’ then ‘Run’

         2. Type in the box: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN

         3. Click ‘OK’

         The MSN folder will open.

         4. In the MSN folder, do the following:

                   a. Click ‘Tools’, ‘Folder options’, then ‘View’

                   b. Put a dot on ‘Show hidden files and folders’

                   c. Uncheck the ‘Hide extensions for known file types’

                   d. Click ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’

The db30 folder will appear inside the MSN folder.

         5. Open the db30 folder and look for a file that ends as msn-com.sdf and msn-com_JMF.sdf

         6. Right-click, choose ‘Rename’ and add .old after .sdf to both these files

         7. Close the db30 folder

Please reply for further assistance

Thanks!

Hi SAMPATH,

Thank you for your help.

I just tried to rename the .sdf files as you have described, but when I openned the db30 folder it was empty. There are login files for the two email addresses I have in the other folder in the msn folder, but no msn-com.sdf or msn-com_JMF.sdf files. I did a system search for these file and did not find any reference to them on my system. The folder db30 is empty.

Hi Tom,

These files will be hidden, hence you need to unhide these files and then rename the .sdf files. Please find the steps below:

a. Click ‘Tools’, ‘Folder options’, then ‘View’

b. Put a dot on ‘Show hidden files and folders’

c. Uncheck the ‘Hide extensions for known file types’

d. Click ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’

The db30 folder will appear inside the MSN folder.

1. Open the db30 folder and look for a file that ends as msn-com.sdf and msn-com_JMF.sdf

2. Right-click, choose ‘Rename’ and add .old after .sdf to both these files

3. Close the db30 folder

Please reply for further assistance

Thanks!

Hi Sampath,

I went back and reverified I followed all the steps you outline which I had done. All were correct. I have a dot on the Show Hidden files and folders and i unchecked the Hide Extensions for known file types. I applied the new settings. The db30 folder states it is empty when I pass my cursor over the folder or after I open the folder. There are no files in the folder.

What is next?

Tom

Hi Tom,

As you’re unable to find the .sdf files, we need to perform ctrl+shift+f11. Before we perform the step of ctrl+shift+f11, we need to take backup of all your favorites and emails stored on 'Folders on computer'

Please find the location of the MSN6 folder and save it on the desktop without fail

For Win XP: C:\documents and settings\user\application data\MSN6

Please find the steps in the link below to take a back up of your emails stored on 'Folders on computer'

http://answers.msn.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=d830f08c-414d-49ae-91cb-df58aa44832f

Steps to perform ctrl+shift+f11

1. Click on the MSN butterfly, (Do not sign in)

2. Press the keys ‘ctrl+shift+f11’ altogether

Once you perform these steps, you would get a warning to Remove accounts click on Remove accounts.

3. On the desktop double click the MSN butterfly, it will take you through the installation wizard, complete the installation and wait for some time to get the email synchronization to be completed. Please check if the problem persists.

Thanks!

Hi Sampath,

I performed the above tasks as you had outline. I had no issue deleting my accounts and reinstalling MSN. All my emails were already saved on MSN so I did not ned to that step. I did delete some really old emails that were the Sent Emails folder before deleting my account a reloading. This caused the email synchronization to take a few minutes to complete prior to shutting MSN beofre doing the cntrl-shift-F11 command. After performing the procedure I did not encounter a synchronization time period. I thought the first time I went to email would take some time and it did, nearly two and half minutes to open, but on other attempts to access email again, it took the same amount of time to open.

The procedure improved my sign in speed slightly once clicking on MSN Butterfly, but going to email or settings or another MSN task still take over two minutes to complete. If I go to another web site url the application works quick and takes me right there. The slowness is just when logging in to MSN and perfroming MSN Tasks.

Is there a time tomorrw that I could work with you over the phone? I am off tomorrow and available. Let me know.

Thanks,

Tom
