An icon that says MSN Mail keeps popping up on my desktop. I delete it and it keeps reappearing. If I click on it, I get a bunch of nonsense on Wordpad. What do I do the keep this icon from continuously appearing on my desktop?

Hello Fred,

There is a possibility that the hidden icons are set to show up on the computer causing the MSN Mail icon to show up again even after being removed.

Please follow these steps:

1.. Click on Start then inside the Search programs and files box at the bottom, type %USERPROFILE% and press Enter. If you get an error, please double-check the spelling and make sure that there are no spaces.
2.On the new window, please click on Organize at the top left hand corner then click on Folder and Search Options. This would open the Folder Options window.
3. In the Folder Options window, click on the View tab at the top. In the View tab, under Advanced Settings look for "Hidden files and folders" then click on "Do not show Hidden Files and Folders".
4. Just below "Show hidden files and folders", check both "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".
5. Click Yes on the Warning window. Then, click Apply and click OK to close the Folder Options window.

I failed to mention that the MSN Mail icon is a shortcut to Notepad. Still popping up, I delete it and it reappears. This is a real mind bogler.

Thank you for attaching the MSN Mail file. Normally this is a hidden icon. Please follow these steps so it won’t keep on popping up:

1.       Do a right click on the MSN Mail icon on the Desktop then click Properties.

2.       On the General tab, check Hidden then select Apply and Ok.

3.       If you’ve already followed the steps last Wednesday, March 21, 2012 5:54 PM to hide the icons, this MSN Mail icon should not show up anymore even after you restart the computer and sign in on MSN.
