I can login to MSN Premium but the Inbox icon shows a orange triangle with an exclamation point in the triangle
and does not show new email.

If i sign in to Hotmail, I can access new email.

We do not have any known server issue as of this writing. Also based on what you mentioned that you are able to access the email messages on Hotmail, this proves that there is no server maintenance.

What is happening is the email synchronization file (SDF) that is found on the computer has gotten corrupted causing MSN not to be able to download the email messages from the server. Please follow the steps on this link so the file can be replaced:  http://answers.msn.com/thread.aspx?threadid=1e24ba67-43eb-44af-a24d-8462d528464b

If the same issue persists, please click on the triangle beside the Inbox and select More Information. Kindly copy the complete error information especially the one beginning with the hexacode 0x.

Feel free to reply to this post for any questions and feedback.

Thanks!

Looked for the file:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MSN

not on my pc.

Can I just do a uninstall/reinstall of MSN Premium?

Would that fix my issue?

Thanks

Don

Hello Don!

Removing and reinstalling MSN will not resolve the Inbox error that you’re getting since it will not target the damaged email synchronization file (SDF).

Please follow these steps instead for a Windows Vista or 7 computer:

1. Close all windows and click Sign Out at the top of the MSN window, then select Sign Out and Close.

2. Click on Start then inside the Start Search or Start search programs and files box at the bottom, type %USERPROFILE% and press Enter. If you get an error, please double-check the spelling and make sure that there are no spaces.

3. On the new window, please click on Organize at the top left hand corner then click on Folder and Search Options. This would open the Folder Options window.

4. In the Folder Options window, click on the View tab at the top. In the View tab, under Advanced Settings look for "Hidden files and folders" then click on "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

5. Just below "Show hidden files and folders", uncheck both "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".

6. Click Yes on the Warning window. Then, click Apply and click OK to close the Folder Options window.

7. Double-click the folders in the following order:

> AppData

> Local

> Microsoft

> MSN

> db30

8. Arrange the files by type so it will be easier to locate the files we need. To do this, on the top left-hand corner of the window, click on the down arrow beside View then click on Details. After this click on Type at the top of the window to arrange the files by type.

9. Scroll down the list until you find the files that end with .SDF

10. Delete the two .SDF files that show your email address. To do this, right click the file and click on Delete

IMPORTANT: If you have other email accounts that have the same issue, please delete the .sdf files for the other email accounts.

11. Close all open windows.

After doing the above-mentioned steps, please continue with refreshing the local data storage as mentioned on this link: http://answers.msn.com/thread.aspx?threadid=1e24ba67-43eb-44af-a24d-8462d528464b

If the same orange triangle shows on the Inbox, please click on the triangle beside the Inbox and select More Information. Kindly copy the complete error information especially the one beginning with the hexacode 0x.

Feel free to reply to this post for any questions and feedback.

Thanks!

Isabelle M.

Hi Isabelle:

Tried the fix above and it worked for a short time, but orange triangle came back!

Funny thing though>if I left click the triangle, it fixes my email temporarily.

Here's the error code:
   0x85ad3204

What else would you suggest?

Thanks for your help.

Don

Don, since you already did the basic steps, it's also possible that there are other affected files. Please check the firewall or antivirus on the computer. Make sure that it is not set to block MSN. Also, if the security software ha an e-mail filter, make sure that MSN is allowed.

Thanks,
Natasha

Hi Don,

Thank you for following the steps provided by Natasha and for your patience regarding this concern.  I was able to check the email servers and there is no maintenance on the server where your email address is. We’ll do more advanced steps to resolve this concern.

First, go to the email page and check if you only have 1 Inbox. If there are others, please follow these steps to remove additional email accounts which maybe causing the concern:

1. Click on Help & Settings at the top then click Settings.

2. Click "1 Change your e-mail settings"

3. Click "Additional e-mail accounts"

4. Click "Additional MSN and Hotmail e-mail accounts"

5. Select the account you want to remove then click the Remove Account button.

6. Click Yes to confirm

7. Click Save Changes

8. Click Done

9. Click the Mail&More icon at the top to go back to the email page

10 The additional email account should no longer be on the email page.

11. Sign out then sign in on MSN and allow 10 minutes or so for the email messages to download from the server.

If you do not have additional email accounts, please follow Method 1 steps on this link to back up the email messages:  http://answers.msn.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=d830f08c-414d-49ae-91cb-df58aa44832f

Once the email messages have been backed up, please read the Private Message below.

Hopefully this time we’ll be able to make up for the inconvenience this issue brought you. Feel free to reply to this post for any questions and feedback.

Thanks!

Isabelle

I have other email accounts using my MSN Premium. The above fix seems complicated.

I did a uninstall/reinstalled MSN Premium (the fix that I was told by one of your reps would not work) and my email has been fine for a week!

Hi Jeepsy,

Thank you for testing it out. Uninstalling and reinstalling the MSN Premium Internet Software will work to resolve an e-mail issue in a case where the old version was previously installed. reinstalling will get the new version which is capable of communicating with the MSN server.

The solution provided will refresh the data files which are not touched even when you uninstall. The steps provided are the basic troubleshooting methods for these types of issues. it's quite detailed and easy to follow when you start working on it.

But if your account works fine now, then that is great :-)

Thanks!
Natasha
