The first time I noticed this I was in ebay trying to upload pictures and that link would not respond. But as I have looked for answers I noticed it is pretty much every time I enter a website and links within that site do not respond. So trying to get help has been tough.

We'll need to check the logs on the computer about this. While it can relate to a problem on the MSN files, there are also other possible factors. For example, Internet Explorer-related configuration couold be causing this. MSN uses Internet Explorer as its backbone in the browsing processes. Another possibility is an operating system-related failure.

How do we check on which might have caused the problem?

1. Restart the computer and reset Internet Explorer:

    a. Before you start MSN, click Start and type inetcpl.cpl in the Start Search area; then press enter
    b. In the Internet Properties/Options, go to the Advanced tab and proceed to reset through the button near that window's bottom part.
    c. Try signing in and check if the issue persists. Proceed to the next part if it does persist

2. Verify that Windows Updates are actually up to date.

    a. Click on Start and type Windows Update and it should show in the list
    b. Select it as it comes up and check if there are updates that you need to download and install
    c. If the issue persists after an update of Windows, proceed to part 3

3. Check what module caused MSN to end/crash.

    a. Click on Start
    b. Type eventvwr and press enter
    c. In the Event Viewer Window, open the Windows Logs at the left side.
    d. Select Applications
    e. Click Filter Current Log at the right side
    f. Put a check on ERROR
    g. Change <All event IDs> to 1000
    h. Click Ok
    i. In the list at the middle, look for at least 3 events/items that show msn.exe as Faulting Application Name
    j. Provide me the Faulting module name and the date.

We'll check on that and provide you the appropriate action to resolve the issue.

I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I followed the directions and the 3rd item you listed here are the events you asked for:

3/3/12 mshtml.dll
3/19/12 unknown
4/16/12 mshtml.dll
4/16/12 mshtml.dll

the version of mshtml.dll on 3/3 was 9.08112.1644, I think it was the same for all

thanks,

Kim

Hi Kim,

Thank you for the infomation provided. Based on the faulting module which is mshtml.dll is a windows component wherein it is essential for MSN to work properly especially when browsing heavy flash websites.

Following the step 1 and 2, have you tried MSN Software to go to the website where MSN was not working before?

Try these additional steps to help the problem solved.

a. Press the Windows key on the keyboard and press R
b. On the Run box type these commands

regsvr32 jscript vbscript

c. Click OK when prompted

Thanks!

Paolo M.

Hi,

Internet Explorer serves as the backbone of MSN. mshtml.dll is also a file being used through Internet Explorer. Try following the steps indicated in this link for optimizing your Internet Explorer settings:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936213/he .

You may also try to reset the secure browser settings:

For Windows Vista/7

1. Click Start, type

regsvr32 softpub.dll wintrust.dll

in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

2.Click Start, type

ipconfig /flushdns

Hope these step will resolved the issue.

This is my situation. I have windows XP SP3 and IE 8.0. Everytime I visit the website, cowboybyte.com and after I close this website down to come back to my e-mail, I get the message-MSN Explorer has encounted a problem and needs to close. After I send in the problem report to Microsoft my MSN E-mail will close down and I have to restart it again. I get an event viewer error as 1001 and 1000. I have even ran the Microsoft's acliteinstaller.exe which is suppose to check for and fix errors in MSN Explorer. I have called the MSN Premium Techs and they have even reset my e-mail settings and I still get this message when I do the above. So far the only thing I can see that I can do is to unintall MSN Explorer and then reinstall it. I don't like doing this again. Is there anything I have missed that may cure this problem? By the way I have also done a reset of IE 8.0. Still not cure so it must be in MSN Explorer some where. There may be other websites that causes this but so far I have not found any others. I have also come up with the "faulting module of mshtml.dll" doing my investigation of this problem. Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I alway go to the cowboybyte.come website by clicking a link through my MSN Premium e-mail. I have another computer with Vista that I do not have any trouble with.

Paolo, These are the things I have tried:

I tried what you suggested. I ran regsvr32 script vbscript. This advised that dllregister in jscript suceeded. So this must be ok.

I have reset IE 8.0.
I have ran the MSN Autocare fix with the information listed below:
In one area it did mention something about a "Faulting Module MSHTML.DLL"

I went to the Conservative Byte website this morning and it is still doing the same thing. I don't know what else to do rather than uninstall and reinstall MSN Explorer. But, if this is a windows file causing this, as I have read, then this would not help either. I am sorry I am late getting back to you but according to what I read on this site I would be notified by an e-mail so I was waiting for an e-mail notification. Since everything has checked out so far I do not have any idea what would cause this. Thank you for your help.

Below is the result of downloading and running the "MSN AUTO CARE" In fact I have ran it twice.

Hi Wayne,

If by resetting and applying auto care fix to try resolving this issue with MSN did not work. Please try using Internet Explorer to go to some websites you were unable to do so in MSN Explorer and let us know the results. If the websites won't work on Internet Explorer either then most likely Internet Explorer is somewhat broken and needs to be fixed. We'll wait for your reply.
