This problem has been going on for months.   Using Windows XP.    Desktop icon = MSN Internet (the butterfly).   Dial up connection brings up BING (no choice given, it's a default) window then asks me to download or save.   The only way I can access the internet is to put in Yahoo's address (http://....) on the "address bar" (not the search box).   I do not have Silverlight (?)  on my computer.   Since MSN has BING as the default search engine, please send reliable info to fix this.   Thank you

Sorry for the long response but I wanted to add some additional information to my similar frustration with this.

The above solution works only temporarly on both MSN 10 Explorer and IE 8 Explorer.

It a serious issue with Active X and Bing search.

This is an ongoing problem I have had for months with two of my five computers (others computers are fine and set up exactly same). The two with issues have Vista Pro and the other Windows 7 Pro other two working fine are 2X Windows 7 Pro and Vista Ultimate all with up to date virus programs. Bing is my defalt search browser and I do not wish to change or remove Bing (just want it to work correctly). Silverlight is installed as well as all current windows security updates. I have done numberous virus and malware scans using MS malicious software removal tool and my virus and malware removal software. No malware or virus was found.

The problem: It continually under a Bing search wants to download or save a file called "search" or download "Active X" similar file. In my case it all started happening with a normal windows update of Bing Bar from the MSN search Bar.

This also happens when trying to open the Bing.com site or Bing search in MSN home page web page.
I got two answers from MSN Report a problem & Customer service: They suggested resets, clear cookies, as above plus reset security setting and also reset the Advanced tab setting. I also later out of frustration did a compleate IE 8/9 reset to original setting. This works temporay solution allows search to work but only until I log off, shutdown or reboot and then the Temp Internet Tab settings revert back to "Automatically" from the "everytime I visit the web page". You have to go back an reset all again every time you shut down or reboot in order to regain you Bing search. If somehow the "every time I visit a web page" setting can be saved or pegged the problem might not reappear.

It has a lot to do with IE Explorer which MSN explorer shares settings with along with Active X in Bing and Adobe Flash Player. I removed both Bing Bar and Flash Player it does not happen as often but eventually returns downloading "Active X" or a randowm "Search" file. Flash player 10 appears to be the biggest culpret and the resets do not work when present.

I reinstalled the newest latest Bing bar 7 for IE.

Note: This download or saving a "search" file does not happen when using other seach engines such a Google and Yahoo.

Thanks any help would be much appreceated

One additional note.

When I addressed this to Bing as an issue they answered as follows:

This is Bing Technical Support.

Upon review, the download box that tells you "the file search : http://www.bing.com, save or download later" is triggered by automatic update of MSN software navigation bar. This only happens to MSN Dial up users. Due to the slowness of the connection, users are repeatedly receiving this download box while using MSN Explorer and IE. I suggest you contact the MSN IA Support for further assistance. Please take note that we, the Bing Technical Support team do not handle these kinds of issues as this is not our field of expertise. I strongly recommend that you contact MSN IA Technical Support to seek help. You may reach them by dialing 1-800-4942962.

I regret to inform you that this is as far as I can go in helping you with this situation. I understand that you might feel that we are giving you a run around but I surely hope that I was able to at least shed some light regarding this issue.

Thank you and have a great day.

 Best regards,

 Bing Technical Support

Not sure if I agree with Bing Tech as the two computer that Bing works fine are dialup and all computers also have wifi access cards too.

Thanks again

Hey Slapshot,

Please refer to the following post and try out the solution provided by Shubha.  You may need to click "2" for the second page if it does not appear initally:

Don't know if this will apply in your case or not - I have dial-up - but what has emerged as a nearly miraculous solution for me is to change the accelerator setting to "normal" instead of "fastest", which was the setting I was previously on. I changed it back to "fastest" just to see if it was truly the problem, and sure enough, the download box reappeared. Changed it back to "normal" and Bing worked again. Re-booted, and it is still okay. If you have the accelerator feature, this might explain why only two of your five computers are having problems. They may need to have the accelerator setting be set to "normal". Hope this works as well for you as it has to me. This has been a really frustrating problem.

Thanks Sypathizer your solution seems to work so far for days. The Connection center accellarator set to  normal  while doing Bing search or going to the Bing home page funtions fine. When not searching with Bing I can then go back to faster for graphics speedup. You were correct the other working computors were set to normal instead of fastest.

The HTTP 1.1 under proxy was was only tempory. Especially when I log off and back on or went to the Bing home page by clicking the MSN explorer Bing button.

Only other thing works is changing the Browsing history setting to "every time...."

Thanks my Bing search funtions for now until they find a actual solution.
