Why was I required to verify MSN account and get security code?

Yesterday, when signing into my MSN account using one of my four usernames, I was required to verify the account and get a security code via email.  Why did this check occur?  Is it a timing issue where every so often this verification will be required?  Is it  due to not signing in using this username for a certain period of time?

I have had to get a security code via email when changing passwords or traveling and signing in from a different location.  But, neither of these situations occurred this time with this username.

Also, should I save this code?  The next time a security code is requested, can I enter this same code or is a new code generated with each request?

Hello,

We had ran security update on the server where in you have to verify using a code after once the update takes place on your computer. We have to verify the account using a code if you are accessing the Microsoft account outside your location.

If its forcing you to verify using a code everytime you sign in to your Microsoft account, possibly Two Step Authentication (Newly released security feature) is active on your account. Please visit https://account.live.com and click on "Edit security info" option to check the security proofs.

Please check the private message for MSN Support number to get more assistance even after updating the security proofs.

Note : Please sign in with your MSN email address and password to check the private message

Thanks

Jeeva
