I have the same problem, tried the %userprofile% solution, but it did not help.  I opened the email to a full page in MSN Explorer, and when I clicked on the attachment was told it was unsafe and had been removed.  But I was able to open the same .doc file in IE at the same time, so it was not entirely removed!  I have Windows 8, using Libre Office, which opened the document when the email was in IE and Outlook mail (using MSN Mail as its, uh, resident).  Thanks.
