When I sign into MSN I get a "msn has encountered a problem and needs to close" message In the error report is the following: AppNamr:msn.exe Appver:10.20.91.1100 ModName:hmssm9.dll Modver:10.20.92.1100 Offser:0004589f

Hi Griffin,

It seems the crash issue affecting your account is part of an ongoing issue that it is still being investigated by our support engineers. Temporarily to access your messages on your e-mail account we advise you to add your e-mail address as an additional e-mail account . Here are the steps to do so.

1. Sign into the any secondary account that you have. If you have no Secondary account you might have to create one by visiting our membercenter website https://www.membercenter.msn.com sign in with your primary email address and then under Manage users set up a new account then follow these steps by signing in to new account.
2. Click on HELP & SETTINGS then on SETTINGS
3. Click on EMAIL at the left side
4. Click on ADDITIONAL EMAIL ACCOUNTS
5. Click on ADDITIONAL EMAIL ACCOUNTS
6. Click on Add ACCOUNT
7. Enter the information and then Save the settings.

The messages should be downloaded on your Secondary Account screen as an additional mail account.

I apologize for the inconvinience and hopefully the issue would be resolved soon.

It has now been a year since this post was written about an "ongoing issue...still being investigated".  The problem continues - MSN crashes nearly every day and it doesn't matter which computer it is running on.  Has anything permanent been accomplished on this problem?  Paying a lot for a program that can't stay out of trouble.

Hi,

Following are the reason why MSN is not allowing you to send or recieve emails:

If your data base of your email is corrupt it will load slowly and sometime automatically MSN will shut down.If you have an

Antivirus software, or a firewall which might be blocking the msn to send/receive emails.

If your MSN is corrupt it will fail to respond.

In order to fix this you need to rename the SDF files which are in Database folder.

 

To find the database folder location, please follow the instruction given below:

 

Windows Vista/Windows 7

Note: Sign out from MSN then close the program before performing the steps below.

 

1.  Click ‘Start’

          2. In the Search box, type the following: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MSN

          3. Press the ENTER key         

          The MSN folder will open.

          4. In the MSN folder, do the following:     

               a. Click ‘Organize’, ‘Folder and Search options’, then ‘View’

               b. Put a dot on ‘Show hidden files and folders’

               c. Uncheck the ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ and ‘Hide protected operating system files options’

               d. Click ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’

         If its msn 10.20 db30 folder will appear inside the MSN folder.

If Its msn 10.50 db30 and db40 folders will appear inside the MSN folder.

          5. Open the db30(msn 10.20)/db40(msn10.50)folder then look for files that end as msn-com.sdf and msn-com_JMF.sdf

          6. Right-click, choose ‘Rename’ and add .old after .sdf to both these files

          7. Close the db30 folder

 

Windows XP

Note: Sign out from MSN then close the program before performing the steps below.

 

         1. Click ‘Start’ then ‘Run’

         2. Type in the box: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN

         3. Click ‘OK’

         The MSN folder will open.   

         4. In the MSN folder, do the following:               

                   a. Click ‘Tools’, ‘Folder options’, then ‘View’

                   b. Put a dot on ‘Show hidden files and folders’

                   c. Uncheck the ‘Hide extensions for known file types’

                   d. Click ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’

        If its msn 10.20 db30 folder will appear inside the MSN folder.

If Its msn 10.50 db30 and db40 folders will appear inside the MSN folder.

Open the db30(msn 10.20)/db40(msn10.50)folder then look for files that end as msn-com.sdf and msn-com_JMF.sdf
 Right-click, choose ‘Rename’ and add .old after .sdf to both these files
       8. Close the db30 folder

After renaming the sdf files. Sign in to MSN and wait for the emails to get filter.If still you are unable to send/receive

emails on msn client, then please check the private message for further assistance

Same thing here. And its getting worse?

Is there NO ONE from MSN working on this any more?

MSN will crash at least 10-15 times a week?

Hi,

A program can freeze or crashes due to errors or damages in its file components. 

 

The error window or message pop up usually contains a link for more information that you can click to get the technical data. You can copy it over and tell us about it. Also, please take note what kind of anti virus/firewall programs and registry cleaners  you may have on the computer.

 

If you don’t see one please follow these steps:

 

a. Go to Start then Control Panel and open Administrative tools. If you do not see this, take a look at the upper right side and on the View by box select either small or large icons so we'll see the Administrative Tools.

b. Open Event Viewer.

c. Expand Windows Logs on the left and select Application.

d. Click on Filter Current Log at the right hand side of the page.

e. On the Filter Log window check Error and on the Event ID box type 1000 and then click on Ok

f. On the results, double click the latest application error and it will give you the faulting module of the internal error. 

Make sure that the Faulting Application says MSN.exe as you may see several application error that is not associated with MSN Crash. 

 

Once you have the faulty Mode/Module name ready click on the Quick Links below to fix it.
