DNS Changer, possible shutdown?

Hello -- I don't know if this is the right category in which to post my question or not.  I just read an article about thousand of people's Internet connections becoming disabled early in July due to a shutdown of a govt. program that was put in place to protect users of computers infected by a group of hackers.  The article refers to "DNS Changer".  Does this have any affect on MSN subscribers, and is there anything we should be doing to prevent our Internet connections being shut down?  Is this something that MSN is taking care of?  Thank you.

As far as I know, this DNS Changer is some sort of a virus. Once it gets installed on a computer, it changes some settings which will then disable your ability to connect to the internet. As with other viruses, it will be a good idea to regularly run your antivirus software. If you do not have one, you can install McAfee from http://membercenter.msn.com

I have McAfee Personal Firewall Plus For MSN installed and running. The article I read noted a website to go to to check for this virus; supposedly, it is someone working in partnership with the FBI.  It is http://www.dcwg.org; is this legitimate?  You can't be too certain of anything anymore, even when it's in an AP newspaper article.

I cannot verify that for now, and will have to verify first. But so long as you have the security software, you should be good. I'm also going to keep track on this concern but it shouldn't be a problem as it's seen quite early. The engineers should be able to update the virus definitions by then.

Hi, Paolo --If you check my earlier post (4/21), I refer to a DCWG.gov website, which is where computer users are supposed to go to check on possible infection from this DNS Changer virus.  It is the website address that all the media outlets (print and TV) are giving out.  Since they've been fooled in the past by things like this, I didn't want to try it unless I know it's legitimate.  Thank you for checking in on this; I'll continue to track this for any more information.Lucille.
