i kmow this is for msn premium only and not the economy version i have, but this 2nd question is the result of my first one, to which the first reply was automated with a list of available places i might find my answer. this website was one of them.one resolution i found was to remove the msn premium software with account information from the computer and then reinstall it. i removed it and tried to reinstall 3 times. the first 2 times i could not get past verifying that i have an internet connection so that i could enter my user i.d./email address. the 3rd time, i went ahead and clicked Next, entered my email i.d. and appeared to complete the process. however, after my home page appeared, another error message appeared stating that a problem was encountered with the program and that it needed to close. the program closed automatically. and that's all i can get from this resolution.this same information was provided as a reply to your original automated email reply. your reply came back very simply as "sorry, you have the economy version, and i can't answer your question".all i want to know is, if i uninstall and then reinstall this msn software, will that solve the problem? you don't have to tell me where to find the instructions. i found them already on this website.thanks.

Hi,There are cases that an uninstall and re-install is not the solution for issues being experienced on the msn software. It could be that something might be blocking the access for the msn software, you might want to check or configure your security programs to give MSN full access. What you might need to do is to check the LAN settings on your Internet explorer. To do so:1. Click start2. Click on Control Panel3. Open Internet Options4. Go to the Connections tab and click on LAN settings5. Make sure nothing is checked and click on OKWhat you can try to do as well is to Reset your internet explorer options back to default, to do so.1. On Internet Options go to the advanced tab2. Click on the Button at the Bottom that says Reset.3. Put a check on delete personal settings and click on reset again. For the message that says MSN has encountered a problem and needs to close, if ever you get the message again try to check on the details on the error pop up and copy paste it on your next reply.Hope this helps,Thanks!Paolo M.

Hi Paolo.I unchecked the "automatically detect settings" box in the LAN settings, and tried it again. I still got the "msn has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. The error signature is:AppName: msn.exeAppVer: 10.20.91.1100ModName: hmssm9.dllModVer: 10.20.91.1100Offset: 000638d8Exception InformationCode: 0xc0000005Flags: 0x00000000Record: 0x0000000000000000Address: 0x00000000261e38d8System InformationWindows NT 5.1 Build: 2600CPU Vendor Code: 756E6547 - 49656E69 - 6C65746ECPU Version: 000006D8 CPU Feature Code: AFE9FBFFCPU AMD Feature Code: 00BE824Then I reset the internet options back to default, including deleting personal settings, and tried again. Same results. So I restarted by computer, and tried a 3rd time. Still the same error message comes up, and the technical data cannot be copied and pasted, and it is too much to type in here. Is there anything else I can try?I'm on a 2nd computer on my network, a Dell B130 laptop, running Windows XP SP3, and all my updates are installed and running. I still have a good internet connection, DSL with a wireless router, thru the regular Windows Internet Explorer, and I can sign into My MSN using my Windows Live sign-in user name and password.Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.Tudormaniac

Hi,The error message that you received is definitely a crash on the MSN program. hmssm9.dll is a faulting module that comes from MSN and is usually being called out when using the e-mail component. Try the foowing step outlined here:

I apologize for the delay in replying. 60 hr work week.I tried the solution you provided, and this is what I got back:

C:\Documents and Settings\****** *******\localsettings\applicationdata\microsoft\msn refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

Do you think we should just delete the program and reinstall as if new? I can still get to my msn thru the Windows Internet Explorer 9 and all my email folders are still there. Is there another resolution to try? Thanks for your help. Tudormaniac

Hello.I did as you instructed, and everything seemed to be ok until I signed on again. I got another one of those "...has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages. I reported the error as instructed and here's the error information.

Error signatureApp Name: msn.exe AppVer: 10.20.91.1100ModName: hmssm9.dll ModVer: 10.20.91.1100Offset: 000638d8

Technical Info:Exception InformationCode: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000Record: 0x0000000000000000Address: 0x00000000261e38d8

The following files will be included in this error report:C:\DOCUME~1\EDWARD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\1f5a_appcompat.txtMy MSN closed right after that, although Messenger continued to run properly. This error just occurred. It was my first sign-in attempt after reloading the software. What next?Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.Tudormaniac

Hi,C:\DOCUME~1\EDWARD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\1f5a_appcompat.txt is a reporting file used when uploading error reports to Microsoft and it contains information about the problem (specifically about the hmssm9.dll). One question though, when I looked up on your Subscription, you seem to have different secondary account. Can you verify if its happening to all of your secondary email addresses? We'll wait for your reply.Paolo M.

Hello.I apologize for my untimely response. Apparently the answer I tried to send last Tuesday never got through to you.On the computer I'm having this trouble on, I am the secondary id, the same email address you respond to. My husband is the primary id, and it was his file that was mentioned in the last error report, and his signon throught the MSN Premium software went through without any trouble after I reloaded it. He even has all of his original email folders which I thought would be lost because I did not go through the backup procedures for them. 'Regardless, his sign on id is fine, mine is still the one I'm having trouble with. Since I maintain our network, I attempted to sign on a few weeks ago for maintenance, and got the original error message I've been trying to resolve.Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your assistance. Tudormaniac
